1st XV Rugby Reunion 2020
5 August 2020
On Saturday 1 August 2020, the College welcomed back the First XV rugby teams from 2010, 2000, 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960 and 1950. With over 60 in attendance and a wide variety of ages it made for a fun gathering with many tales told. The group met pre-game in the Strowan House staff room for drinks and nibbles and enjoyed hearing from well-known St Andrew’s College rugby identity Mike (Scrump) Johnston and Rector, Christine Leighton.
The day’s focus then shifted to the main game where the St Andrew’s College First XV took on Shirley Boys’ High School. The Pipe Band performed pre-game and provided a great setting for the players to lead the juniors onto the field and to perform a mass haka with other St Andrew’s College teams. The reunion attendees were treated to an entertaining, fast paced game of rugby. Shirley Boys’ High School are a good team and warrant respect and they brought a huge physical presence to the contest. With scores close at 10–6 to St Andrew’s at the break, the boys then launched some exciting attack in the second half to secure the win, final score 29–13. This was a fantastic squad effort backed up with periods of outstanding defence. This places the St Andrew’s College First XV at the top of the table in the UC Championship competition.
The group then headed to No.4 Bar and Restaurant to continue catching up, celebrate a well-deserved win and to reminisce about their time representing the StAC Thistle.
