Rugby

St Andrew’s College has a long, proud history as a ‘rugby’ school, with the inaugural First XV formed in 1917, the year the College was founded.

Today, our boys’ teams play across all year levels in the Saturday competition organised by the Canterbury Rugby Football Union, with the girls’ team playing in the Wednesday sport competition. Our teams also compete in many other tournaments and competitions, including traditional fixtures, the Presbyterian Quad tournament and the highly competitive University of Canterbury Cup.

We recruit only the best, skilled coaches for our rugby programme along with specialists in strength, conditioning and medical support. Our young people are taught to enjoy success, understand and grow from failure, develop good values and build a strong character. Helping the students to balance the demands of the sport with their wellness and other pressures of a busy school life is another focus.

Our High Performance Sports programme provides a pathway for our promising young rugby players with the same level of professionalism found at ITM Cup levels. Students engage in modern approaches to training, preparation, recovery and all performance aspects.

A touring programme and performance camp in Australia for our Under 15 teams provides them with an excellent pathway into higher-level rugby at the College.

Our players are supported by excellent facilities, including top class grounds, and a High Performance Fitness Centre for strength and conditioning training, nutrition support and a mental skills programme.

The 2015 First XV is our most successful team to date, winning nine of the 10 trophies it competed for, including the Moascar Cup, the Ranfurly Shield of First XV rugby in New Zealand.

All rugby players at St Andrew’s become part of a group of many hundreds who have pulled on the StAC jersey and represented the thistle with pride. Each plays a part in the legacy and tradition of rugby at St Andrew’s College.

2017 Success

Our First XV enjoyed strong success in 2017, the College’s Centenary year, finishing third in the Barbarians National Co-ed Top 4 Championships, after winning the South Island Co-ed final.
