Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey is a fun, year round sport, open to students from Years 8–13 of all levels of ability.

Students in the past have started with absolutely no skating or hockey ability and have quickly progressed to playing for our competitive team.

Practices and games are held at Alpine Ice Sports Centre. Our coach is Mason Kennedy (OC 2015), who is an Ice Black, and Assistant Captain of the Canterbury Red Devils. Trainings are held from Term 1 – Week 1, Term 4.

Beginners are recommended to attend either the CIHA Learn to Play sessions on Friday evenings (the first two sessions are free), or the Christchurch High School League practices on Wednesday afternoons, to build up their ability.

Keen students in Year 8 are recommended to attend the Learn to Play sessions on Friday afternoons in preparation for joining the team in Year 9. They are also invited to train with the team on Thursday evenings.

We enter a competitive mixed team of girls and boys from Years 9–13 in the Christchurch High School League (played on Saturdays in Term 2 and Term 3), which St Andrew’s regularly wins. Our team also competes at the Winter Tournament in Dunedin, plays against the Canterbury U16 side, and has a game against Old Collegians in Term 4.

Ice hockey is a unique, inclusive sport, where boys and girls of all year levels participate together, and everyone in the team gets to play.

Successes

St Andrew’s has a long history of excelling in ice hockey. The St Andrew’s College ice hockey team dominated the final of the Christchurch High School Ice Hockey League against Shirley Boys’ High School, winning convincingly 11–6.
