Equestrian

The equestrian programme at St Andrew’s College provides students with the opportunity to participate in a show jumping, dressage and one-day horse trial event throughout the year.

It is essential that students own or lease their own horse and gear. Riding school or pony club membership is encouraged as this will facilitate access to a wider range of equestrian events throughout the year. One of the major benefits of equestrian is that students can participate in conjunction with their other sports.

There is no formal training each week, although professional coaching and/or riding lessons can be facilitated by the co-ordinator for all levels of riding, should it be required. The co-ordinator also organises competition entries and support for equestrian events.

Key Benefits

The benefits of participation in our equestrian programme include immense enjoyment, physical and mental fitness, and a chance to enjoy the open countryside.

Horse riding develops balance and improves coordination and motor function. Other advantages include strengthening of muscles, reflex acceleration, improved visual perception of space, and the development of responsibility, patience and self-discipline. Learning to control and care for an animal much larger than themselves can have a profound effect on students’ confidence.

If students crave solitude, horse riding can provide that as well. Many horse owners feel their horse is somewhat of a kindred spirit in tune with their own feelings and emotions. In times of stress a horse can be a quiet friend, who is without judgement.

Many of our Equestrian riders also play Polo, with the season starting in late October and ending in late March. Please click here for more information on Polo at St Andrew's College.
