Theatresports

Hākinakina whakaari

Theatresports is high energy improv theatre, with teams of four making things up on the spot, usually involving their audience in the process. It is a fun activity for those who enjoy quick wit, drama/comedy and giving it a go in a safe environment.

Theatresports teaches students the art of listening to each other, to think on their feet, and gain confidence speaking in front of an audience. It is a chance for them to become anybody they want to on stage. They can sing, dance, mime, act out a movie, or even a Shakespeare part. There is an unwritten rule in Theatresports to never say ‘no’.

Miss Gormack and a senior student provide weekly Theatresports coaching for seniors and juniors. The activity is open to all students in Years 9–13 who enjoy getting up on stage and engaging in a variety of games. Students can also come to come along to watch, or go on stage in a non-speaking part. Everyone and all levels of participation are welcome.

Our competitive teams are involved in the Court Theatre Secondary Schools’ Competition, which is run throughout the year.

The Court Jesters run workshops for our students, and also come to the College to help students further develop their Theatresports skills. They also help to run friendly competitions during the year at other Christchurch schools.

Successes

At the 2019 Theatre Fest Nationals, our students won Best Youth Production and also Best Emerging Talent.
