Duncan Ferguson – Head of Music

Duncan has a strong background in classical and jazz and is a graduate with double degrees from the University of Canterbury and the Christchurch Jazz School and has an extensive background as a bass player in Christchurch and overseas. Duncan has developed leading edge curriculum programmes for students creating a range of projects to suit individual needs. Since the implementation of NCEA in 2001, Duncan has developed aural and music technology resources that are used by over 90% of New Zealand high schools. Duncan is a NZQA moderator and an Apple Distinguished Educator leading the way in Music Education and Technology.

Bryan Botting – Stacchorus, Secondary Choir

Bryan has been directing choirs at St Andrew’s College for 19 years and is also a Director of our national award winning boys’ barbershop. An accomplished singer and pianist, he received his degree in music from University of Canterbury.

Naomi Hnat – Choir Director of Staccoro, Senior Chorale

Naomi Hnat is the new director of the Staccoro choir and is a voice teacher at the school. She also works as an itinerant teacher at different schools in the city, which includes other choral directing roles as well as cello teaching. She is a member of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and sings in the Christchurch Youth Choir. Naomi has recently completed her Masters in Educational Psychology and is undertaking secondary school teacher training in order to continue her work as an itinerant.

Mark Hodgkinson – Orchestras and Chamber Music 

Mark is a freelance conductor and teacher, based in Christchurch. He studied trumpet in Sweden with Bo Nilsson and conducting in Aspen with Murr.

Specialist Tutors

The Music Department runs an extensive programme of instrumental and vocal tuition with more than 22 tutors coming into the College each week.
