St Andrew’s College has a proud culture of netball success. The vision of our programme is to assist players to reach their full potential and develop well-respected, spirited and passionate netballers.

Participation is actively encouraged, with the netball programme designed for the enjoyment of all. Trials are held at the beginning of the season to ascertain a suitable level and team for each player.

Our netball teams compete in both the Wednesday school competition, and Saturday club competition, which runs through the holidays. Our Senior A team also competes in the South Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament, and has qualified for the National Tournament on more than one occasion. Players from the 9A and 10A teams participate in the Junior South Island Secondary Tournament in the July school holidays.

A significant number of high calibre people support our netball teams, including some high profile former New Zealand franchise and international players.

We have two specialist programmes at St Andrew’s, which help our netballers to develop:

Netball STAC (STAC = specialist training and conditioning) Squad

This programme has been introduced for athletes who are establishing themselves in the Senior A team, or who have the potential and desire to trial for this team in the next two years. The aim is to assist and guide individual athletes to increase their knowledge and skills in their specific court area.

Athletes nominate themselves for the squad, with their parents’ support. The squad of around 12 players is announced at the netball prizegiving, with individual athlete assessments taking place for successful applicants in October. An individual programme is developed, taking into account the student’s activities, commitments and overall workload during the off-season.

The squad is fluid in nature. Players are released when their competencies are reached, or when load management requires, and other athletes are given the opportunity to join and participate.

StAC Netball Academies – Junior and Senior

The aim of our Netball Academies is to provide a pathway for young netballers to the Senior A squad. Both academies are facilitated by Motivationz, whose director, Marg Foster, a former Silver Fern, provides expert quality coaching and training. Marg is also a former New Zealand A coach, a Silver Ferns selector, and Canterbury Head Coach.

Motivationz runs a holistic programme that includes skills specific fitness principles, mental skills, nutrition, relaxation techniques, social outings and team building exercises. The company’s vision is to: ‘Enhance lives through building confidence and self-belief’ using netball as the vehicle.

2017 Success

Our netball teams enjoyed another highly successful season in 2017, with our Senior A team placing second at the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament, and qualifying for the national tournament. The team also won their local Supernet competition.

The Year 9A team also had a successful year, winning all three of their major competitions – the Junior South Island Secondary Schools Tournament, the Supernet tournament, and the Christchurch Netball Competition.

Many of our players made Christchurch netball representative teams. We also had athletes selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools tournament team, the South Island Secondary Schools tournament team and Junior South Island Secondary Schools tournament team.
