Basketball

Poitūkohu

Basketball is an incredibly popular team sport at St Andrew’s College and is the largest sport in terms of participation at the College. It is open to all students from Years 9–13, at both social or competitive levels.

Basketball is played in the winter season; running from Term 2 through the end of Term 3. Trainings for competitive teams often start late in Term 1 in preparation for the season. Our Senior A Boys’ and Girls’ teams play in the Thompson/Whelan Trophy competition on Tuesday nights. Our competitive teams also play in the Canterbury Basketball Association club competition on a Saturday (Boys) and Sunday (Girls).

The remaining teams play in the Friday competition. Many students get a team together with friends to enter a more social grade, whilst our top Year 9 Boys’ and Girls’ teams also compete in the top division of their respective grades. Games take place at various venues in Christchurch.

Our Senior A Boys’ and Girls’ teams attend the South Island Secondary Schools tournament during winter tournament week, which gives them the opportunity to qualify for Nationals. Our Year 9-10 students are also involved in the South Island Junior tournament at this time.

We have two fantastic gymnasiums which cater for Basketball over the winter season. Our teams have dedicated and skilled coaches; with further support provided by teachers and staff. Competitive teams also have access to our shooting machine, fitness centre/trainers, as well as a mental skills coach.

Students who excel at basketball have opportunities to study and play overseas. St Andrew’s College has direct access to the Mainland Eagles Academy, whilst the head coaches for the Boys’ and Girls’ programmes have had former players pursue basketball both as a tertiary and professional pathway.
